Why Waiting Feels Better Than Getting: The Truth About Dopamine
Last month, I watched a student check her phone four times before I had even started the lesson. Each time, her face lit up for a second—a small flicker of interest—and then dropped again, just as quickly, when nothing new appeared. She wasn’t checking for anything specific. She was just checking.
I asked her about it afterwards. She said, “I don’t even know why I do it. I’m not expecting anything important.” That answer stayed with me, because it points to something most people misunderstand completely: what dopamine actually does.
Not the “Happy Chemical”
Dopamine gets called the “happy chemical” almost everywhere online, but that description is misleading. Dopamine doesn’t create happiness. It creates wanting.

There are actually two separate systems working in your brain. One creates the desire to do something—the pull, the urge, the “I need to check this right now.” A completely different system creates the actual enjoyment once you’re doing it. Dopamine belongs mostly to the first system: wanting.
This explains something strange. You can want something intensely and enjoy it only a little. That’s the exact feeling behind compulsive scrolling—you keep reaching for your phone, but the pleasure barely arrives at all.

Why Waiting Feels Stronger Than Getting
Here’s the part that surprises most people. Dopamine is usually strongest while you’re waiting for something, not when you finally get it. The few seconds before you open a message, refresh a page, or hear a result—that’s often the most exhilarated you’ll feel in the whole experience. Once the answer arrives, the feeling fades quickly, whether the news was good or not.
This is why my student kept checking her phone. It wasn’t really about receiving something. It was about the small window of anticipation right before checking—the brief moment where anything still felt possible.
The same pattern shows up in smaller moments too. Someone posts a photo and then checks, again and again, to see who has reacted. The moment of posting isn’t where the pull is strongest. It’s the gap afterwards, while you wait to find out.

Two Kinds of Activities
In a recent lesson, my students and I sorted daily activities into two groups: activities that finish, and activities that never really finish.
Cooking a meal finishes. You cook, you eat, you feel satisfied—maybe even a little proud—and it’s over. Scrolling social media never finishes. There is always another post, another video, another notification. There’s no natural stopping point.
Both activities use dopamine. But they don’t leave you feeling the same way afterwards. Finished activities tend to leave people feeling content, fulfilled, even gratified. Never-ending activities tend to leave people feeling hollow, restless, or simply empty—which is why people can often feel tired and empty after they scroll social media for extended periods of time, even though nothing really “happened.”

Built to Never Finish
This isn’t an accident. Many apps are deliberately designed without a natural stopping point. Pull-to-refresh, infinite scroll, unpredictable notifications—these all copy the same mechanism used in slot machines. You never quite know what you’ll find next, so the dopamine system stays switched on, waiting.
The uncertainty is the whole point. If you knew exactly what was coming, the anticipation would fade quickly. Because you don’t, your brain keeps checking, again and again.

How Much Bigger?
Ordinary rewards—a good meal, a compliment, finishing a task—raise dopamine by roughly 100 to 200 percent above its normal level. Certain addictive substances raise it by 350 percent, sometimes over 1,000 percent, and the effect lasts far longer.
After repeated exposure to spikes that large, the brain adjusts. Ordinary rewards start to feel smaller by comparison. This is part of why people can feel restless or under-stimulated by simple, everyday pleasures after long periods of heavy scrolling, gaming, or other high-stimulation habits.

A Different Way to Look at It
I’ve been thinking about my student’s four phone checks quite differently since looking into this properly. She wasn’t bored, exactly, and she wasn’t looking for anything in particular. She was simply caught in a loop that never resolves—one small window of anticipation after another, with nothing solid on the other side to actually land on.
Dopamine itself isn’t the problem. It’s the reason people finish difficult projects, learn new skills, and chase goals that matter to them. The real question is simpler than it sounds: does the thing you’re reaching for actually finish? Or does it just quietly ask you to reach again?
